1991 was a big year for video game players and for video game characters as well. The Super Nintendo was released outside Japan and basically dominated the market with games like Super Mario World, Zelda: A Link to the Past, and F-Zero. Yoshi and Captain Falcon are still known today, Yoshi even gets new own games now. The arcades were a much stronger part of the gaming scene and saw one of the most important fighting games ever with Street Fighter II. Its competitor SNK released Fatal Fury, their own take on a fighting game which had only 3 playable characters which would change with the sequel though. All its characters like Blanka, Chun Li and M.Bison are still known today. Sega tried to pull out their own mascot platformer game Sonic The Hedgehog which was super successful and spawned over 30 games till today while their answer to Final Fight, Streets of Rage sadly spawned only three games.
