The GA-HQ Final Fantasy Art Tribute - Those Who Fight Further

Captain Basch from Final Fantasy XII

 Basch FFXII
Basch fon Ronzenburg FFXII

Captain Basch (fon Ronzenburg of Dalmasca) from Final Fantasy XII is one of the main protagonists and helps Princess Ashe and the others with all his strength. He represents the Knight Job Class.

It’s great to see this strong character as one of the first two protagonists chosen from Final Fantasy XII and illustrated by three artists from the Game-Art-HQ Community for our big Final Fantasy Art Collaboration.

Captain Basch from Final Fantasy XII, drawn for Final Fantasy – Those Who Fight Further

by Mike Williams, Eli Haun

Why did you choose Basch?
Well, I wanted to do a Final Fantasy XII picture for a while and the art tribute popped up which made an amazing excuse. I primarily chose Basch as I knew most people wouldn’t go for him as [their] initial choice.

What do you like about him and about FFXII?
I like Basch’s involvement in the main story of the game and kinda feel like he would have made a better protagonist than Vaan. XII to me is one of the better entries in the series as the art direction and music is done by a completely different team than the other entries.

What tools did you use for the artwork?
As always I used my desktop computer, an aging graphics tablet, and Photoshop CS6.

Please describe your take on him
I was going through a phase of heavier lines and more emphasis on shading using black lines, giving it a more western comic book feel to it.

Is there something else you want to tell the visitors of the Final Fantasy Art Tribute on GA-HQ?
I can never really think of things to say on these bits other than keep on gaming and enjoying the amazing artworks here.

Why did you choose Basch?

I chose Basch because he was one of my favorite characters from FFXII (sans Bathier).

What do you like about him and about FFXII?
He always came across as more of a rugged man, which ran contrary to the usual ’emo’ or ‘goofy’ guys in the Final Fantasy games (at least the new ones). Also, FFXII had a more fantastical setting compared to other games in the series. I prefer fantasy to sci-fi, and XII scratched that itch.

What tools did you use for the artwork?

I used Corel Painter 12, and a Wacom Intuos4 small. (My laptop is a HP Elitebook 8560w, in case you need that too)

Please describe your take on him

I really like Basch. He is strong, smart, and most of all, loyal. He stuck by his guns.

I hope you all enjoy it! I learned a lot doing this, and I am glad I got the chance to participate. For Dalmasca!

Artwork and description of it by Eli Haun

About the Artist:

Eli Haun is a currently 22-year-old art student from the USA and draws all kinds of things and, like the other two artists who drew Beowulf Cadmus for Final Fantasy: Those Who Fight Further, it is his first submission to a GA-HQ Art Project. He continues to be on board with a claim and contribution for Link’s Blacklist Round III as well.

Why did you choose Basch?

I chose Basch because I saw the post asking for an artist that could take him on, but since I’m a big fan of him, it worked out great.

What do you like about him and about FFXII?

I really enjoy his story, kind of mirroring The Man in the Iron Mask/Three Musketeers lore and FFXII is one of my favorite RPGs, hands down.

What tools did you use for the artwork?

I drew it out in pencil on A4 paper, then inked it all out. After that I scanned it in and brought it to Photoshop where I added the colors and effects.

Please describe your take on him

Well, I figure when most people draw a tribute to some fantastic video game badass, they’ll draw him in a cool pose holding a sword. When I played through XII, the biggest scene with him that struck a chord was in the beginning when we find him in a cage as a life prisoner. I thought that depicting him in this sad state would be a fun challenge.

Is there something else you want to tell the visitors of the Final Fantasy Art Tribute on GA-HQ?

To anyone that hasn’t given XII a chance, I promise it’s well worth it. Don’t listen to the naysayers, this game is a masterpiece.
