The Thief is one of the oldest job classes in the Final Fantasy games with it being one of the default classes in the classic Final Fantasy from 1987. The Thief Class returned in almost all Final Fantasy games that had job classes, including Final Fantasy V (1992), Final Fantasy XII (2006), and Final Fantasy Tactics (1997) among the majority of all Final Fantasy games. In some of the games like Final Fantasy VI (1994) or Final Fantasy VII (1996) characters like Locke and Yuffie represented the Thief Class.

Zidane from Final Fantasy IX (2000) represented the Thief Class for the first time as the main protagonist in the series.

Like every job class, it has its unique features, one of the most important moves the Thief Class has is the Steal command which lets your character steal items, sometimes even rare weapons or armor pieces.
