Shang Tsung from Mortal Kombat

Shang Tsung is an antagonist from the Mortal Kombat fighting games by Midway Games and now Netherrealm Studios.

He debuted as the unplayable final boss of the first Mortal Kombat (1992) and became a playable character in the sequels Mortal Kombat II (1993) and Mortal Kombat 3 (1995). While he was completely absent in Mortal Kombat 4, he returned as one of the two playable main antagonists in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (2002)

While he was considered to be finally dead in Mortal Kombat: Deception (2004) he was playable again in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon (2006) and returned also in playable form in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (2008).

Shang Tsung was again one of the main antagonists in Mortal Kombat (2011) which rebooted the series and retold the events of Mortal Kombat 1-3. In Mortal Kombat X he is only named, if certain endings of the characters are canon, he might return in a future game again.

Shang Tsung returned as a DLC character in Mortal Kombat XI (2019) and became also the main antagonist in its expansion Mortal Kombat: Aftermath in 2020.

Shang Tsung is a sorcerer who is able to steal the souls of defeated opponents and use them to strengthen himself. He is also able to use the look and even the abilities of the defeated. In the early games, he was able to morph himself into all other playable characters, in the later games, this was not possible due to technical limitations anymore.

Shang Tsung is one of the most popular fighting game boss characters and is known for his one-liners like “Your Soul Is Mine”
