The GA-HQ Final Fantasy Art Tribute - Those Who Fight Further

Edgar Rene Figaro, the Machinist from Final Fantasy VI

Edgar Roni Figaro FFVI PSX Intro

Ff6_edgar

Edgar Roni Figaro is one of the first playable characters in Final Fantasy VI but also extreme useful with his different tools he can use in the battles and has the rarily seen “Machinist” title.

After FFVI he was not seen in any FF or KH games again sadly.

Edgar Roni Figaro FF Art Tribute

Why did you choose Edgar Roni Figaro?

I love the Yoshitaka Amano Concept art of his character and thought it would be great to paint my version of this.

What do you like about him and about FFVI?

With all the Final Fantasy series I love the mix of fantasy and steampunk elements. It’s a heavy influence on a lot of games today I feel! Plus doesn’t everyone love Airships and Magic!

What tools did you use for the artwork?

The artwork is all digitally produced on Photoshop. I sketch my layout, create a flat colour image then render the detail over the top.

Please describe your take on him

My take on him is from the concept work of the great Yoshitaka Amano, I wanted to bring his elaborate design into a ‘real world’ view as his armour in the game is a little more toned down. At first I had the backdrop as desert and water; elements represented in the colours of his armour but it was much more fun to place him on a Airship I thought.

Is there something else you want to tell the visitors of the Final Fantasy Art Tribute on GA-HQ?

I had a blast creating this piece for GA-HQ and hope to participate in future project galleries! I learned a lot creating the parts of this piece and hope I can carrying this on to my future work! Thanks game-art-hq! Hope Edgar fans enjoy it.

Edgar Roni Figaro FFVI

Why did you choose Edgar?

It happened by chance. He was available and I thought “Sure, why not?”

What do you like about him and about FFVI?

FFVI was the first Final Fantasy game I played. I think it has one of the best stories of the entire series (closely matched with FFVII and FF Tactics). One of the great things about it is the large variety of characters, almost all of which are developed thoroughly and are very likeable.

What tools did you use for the artwork?

I did my art piece entirely using my Wacom tablet and Autodesk SketchBook Pro.

Please describe your take on him

At first I wanted to do a royal portrait of Edgar, like the kind you’d find of old European rulers at an art gallery. I went through two other sketches of him where he was posing in a serious manner. I ended up not liking them because they were too plain with him just standing there. I decided to go with something a bit more fun and drew him with his chainsaw and hockey mask to show his more eccentric side.

 Why did you choose Edgar?

Well, basically he was one of the characters I likes the most. If you take a closer look, he’s way more than one would think, he’s a refined and regal king, yet at the same time he’s a sly playboy, he has a very easygoing and carefree nature, yet remains considerate and tactful at all times no matter what the situation, he’s a refined warrior, as a king should be, yet at the same time he’s a badass engineer able to use a wide variety of equally badass tools, basically, he’s the “Tony Stark of Final Fantasy” XD

What do you like about him and about FFVI?

I chose FFVI because out of all main FF games, it had the largest party, full of very unique individuals, and each and every one with a very well written persona, which makes it shine among the FF series ever more nowdays, when most of the characters are terribly shallow, generic and cliche (I know it’s not easy doing something original, but hey, Shin Megami Tensei still gets very original charas to this day), only thing I could “complain” about would be that it would be interesting to see the relations between them all, not just a few between specific charas, but even so, it’s impressive.
And of course, it had what every great FF game had, great story, great music, great designs, it was just one of the greatest FF titles.

What tools did you use for the artwork?

I used the same tools I always use, pencil sketch on a A4 paper sheet, tribal markings doen with a black fine-tip/fineliner, and a little touch up in Paint for the few parts that become a tad too blurry after scanning

Please describe your take on him

In my entry I wanted to show his more badass side. I mean, everyone can swing a sword, but how many characters in the whole series could swing around a huge-ass chainsaw? Or better yet, score a one-hit-kill while swinging it and sport a Jason’esque hockey mask during said kill?
I admit, the Chainsaw Tool was the first thing I thought when planning the sketch, the problem was the second Tool, as I planned to draw him with two, and after some thought I settled with the Auro-Crossbow. Then came the hard part, drawing them, or rather “designing” them for him |D since this was drawn for a tribute project, and the 16-bit sprites weren’t exactly rich in details, it would be a shame to draw these Tools as general shapes or slabs resembling a crossbow and chainsaw, hence I spent quite some time on the designs of both ^^

Hehe, what can I say more? If you haven’t played FFVI yet, by all means give it a try, as it’s not even hard to get (not only the good ol’ SNES, but you can play the PSX version on any Playstation and there was also an updated GBA remake). If you can look past the obviously oldschool, pixelated graphics, you’re up for one great game.
