The Metroid creatures are usually enemies and boss characters in the Metroid games. They debuted as relative strong enemies in the original Metroid (1986).

The second game, Metroid II: Return of Samus (1991) was centered on hunting the Metroid on their homeplanet SR388 and introduced the Metroid as Bosses. Similar to the Xenomorphs in Ridley Scott’s Alien they are encountered in their different forms up to the Queen Metroid as the final boss of the game.

The Metroid were encountered less frequently in the following games but still play an important role since the main antagonists of the Metroid games, the Space Pirates try to use the Metroids for their evil plans.

The Metroid are also enemies named Komayto in Kid Icarus (1986) which was released with the Metroid (1986) game engine.
